Goznak has great experience of production of state awards – orders and medals under the orders of the Division of State Awards of the Executive Office of the President of the Russian Federation and authorized bodies of other countries.
The tradition of awarding merits with orders, medals and tokens has existed in our country for more than 300 years. The production of state awards of unified kinds was started in Russia during the reign of Peter the Great.
Medals and crosses for battle merits were struck at the Saint Petersburg Mint since the middle of the 18th century and until 1917. Orders, medals and awards for other social categories were also produced here. Totally more than 150 kinds of various awards were produced during the imperial period in Russia.
The first soviet award was the order of the Red Banner. It was instituted in 1918. Later on, the orders of Lenin, Labor Red Banner etc. were included into the awarding system. The mints of Goznak produced all orders and medals during the years of the Great Patriotic war, and later awards introduced into the awarding system of the USSR during the postwar years.
In the Russian Federation, the first awards appeared in 1992 – those were the Star of the Hero of Russia and the medal “To the defender of free Russia”. In 1994, the order “For Merit to the Fatherland” and the medal to the order were instituted.
Today, the mints of Goznak produce the majority of awards – orders, medals and honorable distinctions included into the modern state awarding system of the Russian Federation. At the same time, the production capacities, modern technologies and high skills of the employees of the coin and order production of Goznak make it possible to design and produce awards for other countries.
