To the 100th anniversary of the creator of “Proton”01.07.2014
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of birth of V.N. Chelomey the Saint-Petersburg Mint of Goznak produced a commemorative silver coin with the face value of 2 roubles under the order of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.
An academician, twice a Hero of Socialist Labour Vladimir Nikolaevich Chelomey was one of creators of the Soviet “nuclear shield”, took part in developing a number of engines and other most important objects of the rocket, space and aerotechnics. It was under his supervision that “Proton” carrier rockets, “Proton” and “Poliot” artificial Earth satellites were developed.
The commemorative jubilee coin was put into circulation by the Bank of Russia within the framework of the “Outstanding Personalities of Russia” series. The number of pieces was quite small – only 3000 pieces. It was minted of sterling silver in “proof” quality.
Lidia Evdokimova, an artist, and Alexander Bessonov, a sculptor of the Design Center of Goznak created the coin design.
According to the author’s idea, the relief portrait of V.N. Chelomey is located in the left part of the mirror disk of the coin reverse, against the background of the image of the orbital space station and the outline of the Earth. Under the portrait there are dates in two lines “1914 1984” and below them there is an inscription along the edge: “В.Н.ЧЕЛОМЕЙ”.
