On the way to Great Football06.03.2017
Under the order of the Bank of Russia, the Mints of Goznak manufactured eight designs of commemorative and two investment coins of the first series of the “2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ ” Programme. Laser technologies of the design application to the tools and digital colour printing were applied in the coin minting. The authors of the coin designs and sculpture of the obverse and reverse are artists of the Design Center of Goznak E.V. Kramskaya, O.G. Shepel, A.A. Brynza, F.F. Dolgopolova.
Two commemorative coins dedicated to holding FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 in the Russian Federation have been put into circulation. They are a silver one with the face value of 3 roubles (weight of the precious metal in purity is 31.1 g, fineness is 925/1000, diameter is 39.0 mm, issued in the number of 10,000 pieces) and a gold one with the face value of 50 roubles (weight of the precious metal in purity is 7.78 g, fineness 999/1000, diameter is 22.6 mm, issued in the number of 5.000 pieces). The coins were minted in “proof” quality at the Saint Petersburg Mint of Goznak.
On the reverse of both the coins, there is a relief image of the FIFA Confederations Cup against the background of an ornament consisting of elements reflecting the Russian culture, its cultural heritage and the world of football. Below, around the circumference, there is an inscription “FIFA Confederations Cup 2017”.
Two investment coins dedicated to holding 2018 FIFA World Cup™ in the Russian Federation were issued at the same time. The silver one is with the face value of 3 roubles (weight of the precious metal in purity is 31.1 g, fineness is 999/1000, diameter is 39.0 mm, issued in the number of up to 300,000 pieces), and the gold one is with face value of 50 rubles (weight of the precious metal in purity is 7.78 g, fineness is 999/1000, diameter is 22.6 mm, issued in the number of up to 100,000 pieces). The coins were minted in “uncirculated” quality at the Saint Petersburg Mint of Goznak.
On the reverse of the coins, there is a relief image of the FIFA World Cup™, to the right of it, there is a five-lined inscription “2018 FIFA World Cup Russia”.
The first four (of the twelve planned) designs of commemorative silver coins were put into circulation with the face value of 3 roubles (the weight of the precious metal in purity is 31.1 g, the fineness is 925/1000, the diameter is 39.0 mm). The coins are dedicated to the cities hosting the playoffs of the FIFA World Cup™ – Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad and Saransk. The coins were struck in “proof” quality at the Saint Petersburg Mint of Goznak. Each of the coin designs has been produced in the number of up to 24,000 pieces.
A.A. Brynza, an artist, described works upon the designs of the coins dedicated to cities where the playoffs of FIFA World Cup™ are to take place, “We had to bring the coin reverse sketches as close to the requirements of FIFA Brand Manual as possible. We made a few sketches, but a bright emphasis was missing. We found the “window” element in the Brand Manual interesting. We put images of the important buildings and constructions of the Russian cities hosting the playoffs of the great football event into these “windows” – decorative drop-shaped cartouches. The image of the house of N.I. Sevastyanov on the coin dedicated to Yekaterinburg, the monument of Zilant dragon on the coin dedicated to Kazan, the Cathedral of Kaliningrad and the Cathedral of Saint Righteous Warrior Fiodor Ushakov in Saransk.
We divided the coin reverse into two parts with a coloured strip in the shape of the flightline of a stylized ball.
We made one background light according to the requirements of FIFA Brand Manual. An ornament consisting of elements reflecting the Russian culture, its folklore heritage and the world of football made with the help of laser matting, as well as the decorative cartouche, is located against this background. The background of the other segment of the reverse depicting a football field is darker with the dynamic image of the players during the game. If one looks at the reverse closely, there is an impression of a three-dimensional image. I believe we have fulfilled the task because the images on the reverse look dynamic and alive”.
The copper-nickel coin with the face value of 25 roubles was issued in the number of 19,750,000 pieces of the ordinary design; and simultaneously a similar coin of a special collection edition was put into circulation in the number of 250,000 pieces. On the matt area of the coin reverse, there is a relief image of the official emblem of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ and a two-lined inscription “2018 FIFA World Cup Russia”. On the coins of the special edition packed in numbered blisters, the emblem and the inscription are carried out using the digital colour printing technology. The coins have been struck in “uncirculated” quality at the Moscow Mint of Goznak.
18 designs of commemorative and 2 designs of investment coins will be issued within the framework of the “2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ ” Programme during the two years, in 2016 – 2017.
