There is the Coat of Arms of Russia on a commemorative coin of the Bank of Russia 11.03.2016
“For the first time since the revolution of 1917, the Coat of Arms of Russia was minted on all the coins of the Bank of Russia dedicated to the Olympic Games of 2014 in Sochi”, explained Alexander Baklanov, Head Artist of the Design Center of Goznak, People’s Artist of Russia. “Now the Coat of Arms of Russia is located on the obverse of a commemorative coin of regular issue. Two talented artists of the Design Center made the image of the two-headed eagle”. Elena Kramskaya drew the sketch, and Alexandra Dolgopolova modeled it.
“Our artists found no technical difficulty in the work”, said Alexander Baklanov. “The work was done accurately and in a good quality, with an artistic taste. Our main problem was the time; we are pressed for time in our work as a rule”, concluded the Head Artist of the Design Center.
On the coin reverse, on the mirror field of the disc, there is a relief image of the Shoanin Ancient Christian Temple surrounded by mountains, above the temple there are images of two soaring birds, along the rim there are inscriptions, above: "ØÎÀÍÈÍÑÊÈÉ ÄÐÅÂÍÅÕÐÈÑÒÈÀÍÑÊÈÉ ÕÐÀÌ Õ-ÕI ââ." (SHOANIN ANCIENT CHRISTIAN TEMPLE Õ-ÕI cc.), below: "ÊÀÐÀ×ÀÅÂÎ-×ÅÐÊÅÑÑÊÀß ÐÅÑÏÓÁËÈÊÀ" (KARACHAEVO-CHERKESSIAN REPUBLIC).
Anton Schablykin, an artist of the Design Center of Goznak and the author of the coin reverse design, said that when drawing the sketch, an artist first of all thinks how his idea will look on the minted coin.
“I haven’t been to Karachaevo-Cherkessia, therefore I had to use photographic materials. But I have been to the Caucasian Mountains. I wanted to express the beauty of the mountains, the volumes of vastness, the air transparency, the feeling of quietness and highness of the place where an ascetic ancient Christian monastery was built, with only mountain eagles flying above it”.
For these ideas to look well on the coin, it was decided to apply laser matting – the background of the coin is matted; it creates the feeling of volume and vastness of the mountain landscape.
Eduard Tolzyn, an artist of the Territorial Artistic Studio of the Design Center of Goznak, modeled the coin reverse.
The “Shoanin Ancient Christian Temple, Karachaevo-Cherkessian Republic” comnmemorative coins were issued with the face value of 3 roubles in the number of 3 000 pieces.
The coins are minted of sterling silver in “proof” quality. The weight of the precious metal in purity is not less than 31.1 g. The coin diameter is 39.00 mm. The milled edge is of 300 riffles.
