Medals of the XIX century on the jubilee coins of the Russian Geographical Society XXI

The craftsmen of the Moscow Mint of Goznak have struck three jubilee coins dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society. The Bank of Russia put them into circulation in September 2015.

Anton Schablykin, an artist of the Design Center of Goznak, the author of the coin sketches, said that the sketches of all the three coins were created according to the traditions of the Russian Geographical Society that had issued medals and awards for over 150 years.

Anton Schablykin explained that an intricate composition was offered initially, but the Bank of Russia wanted to see plain coins referring to the commemorative medals of the Russian Geographical Society of the previous centuries. The coins were made in the medal style of the 19th century. This fact excluded an intricate combination with the addition of modern pictorial elements or new technologies.

Modelling of the 3-rouble coin was made by A. Bessonov, a sculptor of the Design Center of Goznak; artists of the Territorial Art Studio in Moscow of the Design Center of Goznak modeled the two other coins.

The 3-rouble silver coin of the 170th Anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society series has the diameter of 39.0 mm, the weight of the precious metal in purity is 31.1 g, it is made of sterling silver.

The coin reverse was made after the famous Konstantins medal of the Russian Geographical Society. Around the relief image of the profile of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, around the coin edge there is an inscription: THE RUSSIAN GEORGAPHICAL SOCIETY, founded in 1845. In the bottom left part, there are three lines: GRAND DUKE KONSTANTIN NIKOLAEVICH.

The 50-rouble gold coin of the 170th Anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society series has the diameter of 22.6 mm, the weight of the precious metal in purity is 7.78 g, it is made of pure gold. On the coin reverse there is a profile of F.P. Litke. Around the relief image of the Admiral, along the edge there is an inscription: THE RUSSIAN GEORGAPHICAL SOCIETY, founded in 1845. In the bottom right part there is an inscription in one line: F.P. LITKE.

The coins were made using the classic technologies relief and proof quality.

The 3-rouble silver coin was minted in the number of 3 thousand pieces, the 50-rouble gold coin 1 thousand pieces.

The third coin of the 170th Anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society series with the face value of 5 roubles was made of base metal alloy with the diameter of 25.0 mm. There is a relief edge around the circumference of both the obverse and the reverse; the flank surface has discontinued riffle.

In the center of the coin reverse, there are scientific research and travelling attributes against the background of the network of parallels and meridians of the Earth; below them there is an inscription in two lines FOUNDED in 1845, around the circumference, along the edge there is an inscription THE RUSSIAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY.

The 5-rouble coin was minted in the number of 5 million pieces.

By the way,

The Russian Geographical Society still awards its members with Konstantins medal For great services in the geographical science and exceptional contribution into the Society activity.

Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, the first Chairman of the Russian Geographical Society, founded the medal; therefore it is called Konstantins.
